Ice Fishing in Alaska

Happy New Year! I started this blog last year but have not yet put it to good use. So to begin the New Year I will start with a post from our first trip of the year: Alaska!

This is our second time in Alaska and we absolutely love it! Last year we were here during the summer and we really wanted to experience Alaska during the winter as well.

I am a tropical girl and I tend to get cold pretty easy, so people were really questioning why I chose to come to a place that is known to get below -20 degrees Fahrenheit. But I am also a big outdoors girls and Alaska is a dream for all outdoor adventurers!

The first day that we got here we went ice fishing. Ice fishing is one of the main reason we came during this time of year. We went out to Chena Lake at night during our first fishing trip. Although we had a great time and it was a really cool experience, we did not catch much and what we did catch was very small. We managed to reel in a total of 5 small fish (Jackson 3 and I dropped my third back in the hole) and that was our dinner for the first night. We went back on Saturday during the day and had a lot more luck! I had already caught 2 fish before Jackson even got his pole in the water! He was jealous LOL at least up till he had 14 fish and I was stuck at 5….

The fish were larger as well and we had a much more filling dinner than our first night. We started off fishing in a cabin with our amazing fishing guide Lee. He showed us how to drill the holes in the ice and the right rods and bait to use. Once we felt a bit more comfortable with our newly learned fishing style, we decided to go a bit more rugged and leave the cabin. We drilled our holes and Lee set up a tent and where we were able to fish while staying a bit out of the cold. Jackson caught the biggest fish of the day while in that tent!

Overall, we had an amazing time these 2 days ice fishing and would love to do it again. We are still in Alaska and still have more adventures to come. I will have at least one more post on our Alaskan winter, but that’s all for this post.

If anyone is looking for a great fishing guide near Fairbanks, Alaska we went with Lee from http://akrivertours.com/ They were great!
